General Rules

League Rules Overview

Summerville Girls Softball League follows ASA rules in addition to league-specific guidelines designed to promote fairness, safety, and a positive experience for all players.


Sportsmanship & Conduct

Good sportsmanship is expected from all players, coaches, parents, and spectators.

  • No harassment, abusive language, or unsportsmanlike behavior will be tolerated
  • Coaches are responsible for the conduct of their players, parents, and fans
  • Umpires have authority to enforce rules and remove individuals for violations

Violations may result in warnings, ejections, or suspension depending on severity.


Game Format

  • 8U games: 1 hour or 5 innings
  • 10U-17U games: 1 hour 10 minutes or 6 innings
  • No new inning will begin with 5 minutes or less remaining
  • Run limits apply per inning, with mercy rules in place

Playing Time Requirements

All players are required to participate in each game:

  • Every player must play a minimum of two full innings
  • Players who do not meet this requirement will be prioritized in the next game

Failure to comply may result in penalties, including forfeiture and coach suspension.


Uniforms & Equipment

  • League-issued jerseys must be worn during games
  • Players must wear appropriate softball attire (no jeans or altered clothing)
  • Jewelry is not permitted
  • Catchers must wear full protective gear
  • Only approved bats may be used

Coaches & Dugout Rules

  • Only approved coaches, players, and team personnel are allowed in the dugout
  • Coaches must wear team shirts during games
  • Players not in play must remain in the dugout

Safety & Field Rules

  • No alcohol, drugs, tobacco, or e-cigarettes are permitted at fields or facilities
  • All players must follow safety equipment requirements
  • Injuries must be reported and cleared before returning to play

Protests & Game Decisions

  • Protests must be made at the time of the infraction
  • Written notice must be submitted within 24 hours
  • A protest fee is required and refunded if upheld

General League Guidelines

  • Coaches are responsible for league-issued equipment
  • Lineups must be submitted prior to games
  • All participants must follow SGSL rules, bylaws, and ASA regulations
